The Show: Fellows Edition
On September 8, RCA hosted the second of two 2026 Fellows Editions of The Show, bringing together retina fellows and RCA physicians for an evening of clinical learning, competition, and connection.
The Show: Fellows Edition is a competitive case contest open to retina fellows across the U.S. and Canada. Fellows are invited to submit an interesting case for the opportunity to present before RCA physicians and colleagues.
This year, RCA physicians Dr. Andrew Clark of California Retina Consultants, Dr. Blake Fortes of Retina Group of Florida, and Dr. Cindy McClard of Retina Consultants of Minnesota reviewed and evaluated the submissions. Five finalists were selected to present:
• Dr. Fernanda Dourado, University of Montreal: Subretinal gas following pneumatic retinopexy
• Dr. Beatriz Deud, McGill University, Montreal: Managing recurrent submacular hemorrhage in neovascular ARMD
• Dr. Aumer Shughoury, Cincinnati Eye Institute: Panuveitis due to a chronic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment
• Dr. Sonya Besagar, Vanderbilt University: Giant retinal tear, surgical technique
• Dr. Bivek Wagle, University of Nebraska: Rickettsial neuroretinitis causing a macular hole
Following the presentations, the judges selected Dr. Sonya Besagar as the first-place winner, followed by Dr. Bivek Wagle in second place, and Dr. Aumer Shughoury in third.
More than 150 RCA physicians registered for the event, creating another opportunity to connect RCA’s physician network with emerging retina specialists and share clinical expertise across the field.
Coming up next
The next edition of The Show will take place November 10, 2026, and will welcome visiting professors Dr. Prithvi Mruthyunjaya of Byers Eye Clinic at Stanford University and Dr. Dean Eliott of Harvard/Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. RCA physicians will take the stage to present cases to the visiting professors.
