In February, Retina Consultants of America welcomed Retinal Diagnostic Center (RDC) to its nationwide network of physician-led retina practices. RDC provides compassionate, comprehensive care for patients in San Jose, CA.

“Our decision to partner with RCA was driven by a shared commitment to medical integrity and the long-term success of our clinical team,” said practice physician Dr. Amr Dessouki, M.D. “This partnership provides the scale and support needed to allow us to focus entirely on what we do best, delivering exceptional care to our patients. We are proud to join the RCA family and look forward to a future of shared excellence and innovation.”

RDC has served the San Jose community for decades, providing individualized retina care for patients with complex and wide-ranging vitreoretinal disorders. The practice combines experienced physician leadership with modern clinical capabilities to deliver thoughtful, patient-centered care, prioritizing clear communication, continuity, and outcomes that preserve long-term vision health.

“We are truly excited to welcome our excellent Bay Area colleagues from Retinal Diagnostic Center to the RCA family,” said RCA’s Clief Clinical Officer Joel A. Pearlman, M.D., PhD. “Drs. Chen, Chow, Dessouki, He, Syed, and Cai have provided expert and compassionate care to their patients since 1980 and have been at the forefront of retinal medicine, surgery, and research. Their fight against blindness, empathetic care, clinical excellence, and passion for saving sight will improve the lives of innumerable patients in Northern California for years to come.”

Key to this partnership is RCA’s physician-centered model. RDC physicians will retain their clinical autonomy and continue providing comprehensive diagnostic, medical, and surgical services to San Jose patients. Through the support of RCA leadership and executive management, RDC will continue to reach new patients and expand clinical care and research efforts.

Q: If your practice were a character in a movie, who would it be and why?
Our practice might be Lightning McQueen from Cars, fast-paced, a little chaotic behind the scenes, but powered by a great pit crew. RDC care takes precision and teamwork, and somehow our team keeps everything moving in the right direction. The signature song from the track is “Life is a Highway,” and the staff are always racing down highway 17 and 101 to get to multiple locations!

Q: What’s a small, everyday behavior people here do that makes work better?
Boba runs

Q: Who’s the unofficial “DJ,” “comedian,” or “fix‑it person” in the clinic?
Long term supervisor Juan Hernandez is a person who never says no to a challenge and is heavily relied on as our Mr. Fix-It.

Q: Do you have any unofficial traditions (special days, sayings, inside jokes)?
Every year we have an unofficial BBQ at Sea Cliff State beach and one in the parking lot of the Campbell location where the management team grills for the staff.

Q: What’s a favorite snack, treat, or pick-me-up that regularly appears in the break room?
Ramen and coffee

Q: What’s something your team does that shows what you value most?
The staff takes the time to really build relationships with patients since they come back so often for treatments.

Q: What’s the most unexpected or funny thing that’s happened at the clinic?
A staff member found someone’s wig behind the sliding chair. We put in lost and found for a while, but nobody collected it.
